Hebrews 7:18-22

Today we are reading Hebrews 7.
As we read, these verses stood out to me:

Hebrews 7:18-22 - For, on the one hand, there is a setting aside of a former commandment because of its weakness and uselessness 19 (for the Law made nothing perfect), and on the other hand there is a bringing in of a better hope, through which we draw near to God. 20 And inasmuch as it was not without an oath 21 (for they indeed became priests without an oath, but He with an oath through the One who said to Him, “The Lord has sworn And will not change His mind, ‘You are a priest forever’”); 22 so much the more also Jesus has become the guarantee of a better covenant.

Please, take some time to Share Your Thoughts With Us as they relate to this passage.

You can share anything that is on your heart but, if you don't know where to start, try reading these verses and answering one or more of the following "Honest Questions"

Honest Questions

1. When Hebrews 7:18 says that the former commandment has been set aside "because of its weakness and uselessness," what do you think it is referring to?

2. Compare Hebrews 7:18 to 1 Timothy 8-11. What are these verses teaching us and how should we respond?

3. Is it possible for a person to take these verses out of context and go further than the Biblical writer intends for us to go? If so, what do you think that would look like and how can we avoid it?

4. The story of Abraham's encounter with Melchizedek is recorded in Genesis 14:17-24. When you read those verses what stands out to you most and how do your observations compare to the observations being made by the author of Hebrews here in chapter 7?

5. Hebrews 7:20 is quoting Psalm 110. I am pretty sure Psalm 110 is the Old Testament chapter most frequently quoted by the New Testament writers. Read Psalm 110 and then read Matthew 22:41-46. Do you think the Pharisees realized Jesus was saying that He is David's lord at this time?

6. Do we spend enough time telling people how great Jesus is?

7. Read Acts 2:32-47. How should we respond to the ascension of Christ and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit?

8. Over the course of the next few days, as we read through the rest of the book of Hebrews, the author is going to make several references to God's interactions with Israel. I encourage you to go back and read Exodus 19-20 and Exodus 32-34. Is today's set of questions overwhelming or do you like receiving this many references to other passages of scripture?

9. What was your favorite verse in Hebrews 7 and why?

10. Do you have any specific questions or prayer requests after reading Hebrews 7?
